Dr Darren Berkland is a lecturer and digital media researcher at Ulster University in Northern Ireland. Their research focus primarily explores interfaces, screens and gestures within a broader social context, using critical research methods to examine the relationship between the individual and increasingly pervasive digital assemblages. Since 2023, they have explored more practice-led research exercises in the fields of immersive production, projection mapping and creative coding drawing upon phenomenologies of space and the work of Vilém Flusser.
Further, they specialise in repurposing defunct or legacy technologies—ranging from outdated hardware to obsolete software platforms—to create innovative and unexpected new experiences. Their work spans collaborations with students, artists, and enterprise clients, where they breathe new life into forgotten tech, transforming it into tools for expression, exploration, and engagemen. Darren’s practice blends the nostalgia of digital tools with cutting-edge creativity to reveal new potentials of the past.
